Once upon a time…Rimsky-Korsakov opened his copy of The Arabian Nights, found a cruel sultan and a beautiful princess, and created an orchestral extravaganza like no other. Scheherazade is sumptuous, sexy and dazzlingly tuneful; perfect for Thomas Søndergård’s high-voltage brand of music-making! Meanwhile, Poulenc’s score for Diaghilev’s ballet Les biches, is a deliciously naughty treat – the perfect upbeat to the timeless Gallic elegance of Saint- Saëns’ First Cello Concerto, starring the RSNO’s own Principal Cello Aleksei Kiseliov.
